Repairing Your Credit After Bankruptcy

After completing the bankruptcy filing procedure you might be likely concerned about the state or status of your credit.  Most people feel a bankruptcy has ruined their credit and they have little chance of ever being able to qualify for any type of loan in the future.  At Glanzer & Associates, P.C. experienced Credit Repair Attorneys, who have helped numerous South Side clients restore their credit following a bankruptcy.  Our experienced attorneys have many effective methods of rebuilding and restoring your credit so that you have the financial foundation needed for a brighter future.

There are many steps that can be taken to begin to improve your credit status.  The first step to take is obtaining your credit report.  It is important to review and ensure that all of the debt that was discharged in your bankruptcy is reflected as such in the report.  Typically, it takes several weeks for this information to post on your report.  It is possible that there will be errors in your credit report in this regard that will need to be fixed.  Other errors and inaccuracies should also be removed at the same time.

To begin to rebuild your credit, we recommend obtaining a debit card or a secured credit card.  A secured credit card is simply a regular credit card that is guaranteed or "secured" by a bank account.  Using it sparingly and paying it off completely each month will begin to rebuild your credit.  You can also attempt to obtain a small bank loan that you can make monthly payments on, ensuring you are always on time.  This will also begin to establish a good payment record. If you are married and your spouse did not file for bankruptcy and has good credit, you can share your spouse’s good credit.  The purchase of a home or a car and making timely payments will also build your credit back up.
